Any festival in India is "adhura" without the right movie to be played along. The cinema habit has been as important to the celebrating Indian as has been the pageantry. "Film Festival" acquires a whole new meaning in India. For the aam Indian, every film is a festival and every festival needs a film.
Click on, as we present to you a list of 10 fabulous feel-good movies, to be had with your favourite Indian festival.
1. 'Amar Akbar Anthony'
Directed by Manmohan Desai, 'Amar Akbar Anthony' is the baap of all feel-good movies. A genre-defining pop movie, it continues to inspire escapist cinema in India. 'AAA' gave Manmohan Desai the courage to conceive and execute even more outlandish movie tales such as 'Naseeb', 'Coolie' and 'Mard'. He went on to make "anhoni ko honi" and "honi ko anhoni".
2. 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun'
Sooraj Barjatya's sweetened mush. A feminine assortment of all the pretty and goody-goody things of the world. It's a dream-place full of romance, music, laddoos and jilebis! Choose this film, this Eid, and Sooraj Barjatya would stick a smiley on your face that will last at least till Christmas.
3. 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge'
This is for the satiation of the hardcore romantic. 'DDLJ' celebrates romance. If you are asked to give an alternate title for this movie, it can only be 'The Passion of Shah Rukh Khan (and Kajol)'.
4. 'Dabangg'
The Salman Khan masala.
On a Eid day, this could be an audio-visual feast in itself. We see a self-spoofing Sallu here, and we want what we have always wanted from him: MORE!
5. 'Lagaan'
If you are in a blue mood and want to get back to the festival mode, Bhuvan and co are sure to do the trick for you. The ultimate tale of the underdog's triumph, 'Lagaan' will do to your heart what an energy drink does to your muscle!
6. 'Munnabhai MBBS'
This is the first of what we would call Genre Hirani. This is a totally Indian mix of emotions, drama, romance and soul-stirring (yes, you read it right) humour. The ultimate entertainer, 'Munnabhai...' is for all age groups and for all occasions. Where this movie is, there would be a festival!
7. 'Lage Raho Munnabhai'
Munnabhai descends again! And this time, the EQ (Entertainment Quotient) is higher than ever. Hirani makes you laugh and cry, at will and for a purpose. Mahatma Gandhi joins the chorus!
8. '3 Idiots'
Hirani has a hat trick! '3 Idiots' is for all those who love to see life as Ping-Pong! This give-and-take saga of three friends takes you on a roller coaster ride that is certain to put you in perspective and enable you to laugh at yourself.
9. 'Magadheera'
This mighty blockbuster from Tollywood is bound to instill awe in even the deadliest critics of commercial entertainers. An iconic production, the movie stars Ram Charan Teja (Chiranjeevi's son) and Kajal Agarwal in the lead. It is a tale of rebirth, told with the help of the most modern technology on earth. Fantabulous is the word.
10. Rajnikanth trilogy: 'Annamalai', 'Baasha', 'Padaiyappa'
Go to your DVD vendor and get these three flicks. Call all your friends and play it as loudly as possible. Use the best acoustic enhancements. The basic prerequisite for enjoying a Rajnikanth film is that you need a whistling-clapping-hooting crowd to accompany you into it. Fulfill this condition, and Rajni will make you forget that you are living in the 21st century!
AND......
Kids' Gold: 'Endhiran'
Rajni again!
1. Herd all the kids into the screening room.
2. Play this film.
3. Get out of the room.
4. Close the doors.
5. Have your drink, and listen to your favourite Jagjit Singh ghazal on the futility of life.
