Birthday Special: Rekha turns 57

Her glamorous persona still has men gawking. Rekha, who turns 57 today, metamorphosed into a diva from the overweight young actress she once was, and continues to inspire the current league of actresses.Daughter of southern star Gemini Ganesan, Rekha bagged overnight success with her debut vehicle 'Sawan Bhadon' (1970) and gradually became India's sex symbol. What catapulted her to the Bollywood zenith was Muzaffar Ali's period drama 'Umrao Jaan' (1981) that even won her a National Award.

Having acted in more than 150 films, she made her presence felt with her versatility and different avatars in films like 'Do Anjaane' (1976), 'Ghar' (1978), 'Muqaddar Ka Sikander' (1978), 'Khubsoorat' (1980), 'Silsila' (1981), 'Baseraa' (1981), 'Utsav' (1984), 'Khoon Bhari Maang' (1988), 'Ijaazat' (1988), 'Kama Sutra' (1996) and 'Zubeidaa' (2001) to name a few.

Last seen in a cameo for Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Om Shanti Om' (2007), industry insiders have often spoken of Rekha as a 'capable, disciplined actress with immense range, ability and mastery of precise detail'.

'She is a dreamer... she lives in her own world. She imagines a lot of things that suit her psyche as an actor. She is a very genuine, warm and a very sensitive person... And no denying the fact a very good learner. It has been an amazing experience to work with her; she is a perfect actress,' says film critic Muzaffar Ali.

'Post-'Umrao Jaan', she has kind of withdrawn herself... perhaps because that role was a very cerebral, cultural and classical one that raised her to a pedestal that cannot be surpassed ever... not by her or by anyone else,' he added.

'Rekha is nearest to the parallel of Swedish actress Greta Garbo... they both came from poor backgrounds and climbed great heights... As an artist she was first noticed in 'Ghar' and after that she was no more termed as only a voluptuous artist in Hindi cinema because then came films like 'Khubsoorat' and 'Umrao Jaan' that set her apart,' said noted film historian Gautam Kaul.

'She is enigmatic... because she is hard to get. She only moves in a small circle of senior film people and she shuns the media. That's also because she is a tragic figure with failed relationships... none of which succeeded, so she has withdrawn into herself. The only place she is now noticed is award functions, which are also picked and chosen. But she still doesn't give any interviews,' he added.

'Rekha is a diva... In fact, the term diva (in India) was coined for Rekha. The way she has metamorphosed herself from what she was when she came into the industry is mind blowing... She has worked on her language, body, diction, everything and apart from that she's a fantastic actress,' said renowned film critic Omar Qureshi. Rekha is also known for her lifestyle and glossy image.

Rekha is also rumoured to be penning her autobiography and is also tentatively to appear in the sequel to 'Krrissh'.

Bollywood's Top 10 Pinup Boys

Our B-town boys are no less than the ladies when it comes to capturing the fancy of millions. These men have sensationalised the nation with their style and their ability to relate with the masses. Girls swoon over the mention of their names and boys idolise them try their best to emulate the stars. The 10 actors are those who, at present, ruling people’s hearts and are their favourite pin-up boys.

John Abraham
The reason why we have placed John Abraham ahead of others is because his sex-appeal, which is an essential element of a pin-up boy, can’t be matched by anybody else. His yellow under-pants in ’Dostana’ created a hysteria in the nation and is still the ultimate image of a perfect metrosexual guy. Young guys relate to him and older men try to be like him.

Salman Khan
Salman Khan’s mass appeal has touched new heights post his ’Dabangg’ success. His fan following is like never before and everybody wants a piece of him. Sallu has beaten everyone in terms of success and is the hottest property in town.He has been and will be India’s favourite pin-up boy irrespective of his age.

Ranbir Kapoor
So Ranbir has been tagged as THE Womaniser of the industry. He is being linked left, right and centre at the moment and we can’t say how true they are but we think he does have an eye for pretty girls and pretty girls too, love to love him. Irrespective of his diminishing reputation, girls can’t stop falling for him and guys can’t stop following him (even in the love department).

Shahid Kapoor
Shahid Kapoor took his time to emerge as a major star and when he did, nobody could miss it. He has re-defined his chocolate boy looks and become totally yummy. That sheepish grin and subtle mannerisms manage to win just about everybody. Miss Chopra, we hope you know that you’ve bagged a winner for yourself.

Imran Khan
Breaking on the screen with ’Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ Imran became an overnight sensation. His quirkiness separated him from the rest of the Bollywood actors. He is totally original, drips cuteness, and the fact that he is very much married doesn’t bring down his popularity even a little bit.

Arjun Rampal
Who doesn’t like Bollywood’s style king. His journey from modelling has been with ups and downs but Arjun has an unmistakable sensuality about him which gets girls going gaga. Arjun is indeed one of the best looking men in the list and that only makes it even better.

Neil Nitin Mukesh
His exotic looks bring about an element of mysterious charm in his personality. Everyone wants to know the boy behind those hazel eyes. Neil has also impressed with his choice of roles. He is merely a few films old but has the knack for different roles and hence avoids getting stereotyped.

Abhay Deol
Those cute dimples and and understated sex-appeal seem to have a magical effect on girls. Guys, in the meanwhile, will definitely try to emulate someone who has the ability to turn on girls all over the nation. Abhay has been quietly winning himself more and more fans and becoming one of the hottest pin-up boys.

Hrithik Roshan
Hrithik Roshan is the ultimate Greek god of Bollywood and this his good looks have the ability to impress just about anyone. Add to his credit some huge blockbusters and we have a favourite superstar that people desire and religiously follow.

Akshay Kumar
Akki is first choice of 80’s girls. Acting wise, his comedy project was a hit. Action wise, his dance became a chart buster. What’s more? His cute smile and warm appeal make him extremely desirable among st girls. As for guys, he is one of the coolest guys around and a lot of them take inspiration fom him.

Stunning B-Town Imports

Katrina Kaif
A definite asset, this beauty has the ability to sizzle in any film. Britain born Katrina Kaif is probably India’s most admirable Bollywood import. The actress has indeed worked very hard to make her way into being among the top actresses in Bollywood. The actress has to her fame several hit films like ‘Namastey London’, ‘Welcome’, ‘Singh Is Kinng’, ‘New York and’ Raajneeti’, which not only proved to be blockbusters on the domestic front but also created ripples off shores.

Jacqueline Fernandez

Sri Lanka born hot diva Jacqueline Fernandez is another scorcher who has unquestionably upped the glam quotient by a few notches in Bollywood. Last seen in Mukesh Bhatt’s ‘Murder 2’ Jacky took the nation by storm. Ravishing Jacky is soon to appear in Sajid Khan’s up-coming ‘Housefull 2’.

Nargis Fakri

The girl is generating quite a buzz even before her debut film has hit the marquee. Cast opposite hot-shot Ranbir Kapoor in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Rockstar’, Nargis Fakri has emerged as a fresh face to look out for. Czech-Pakistani model, Nargis, after doing several ads and photo shoots for magazines, was pursued by ace director Imtiaz Ali to play the female lead in his next.

Very attractive and sweet Kalki Koechlin seems very likely to become the queen of the unconventional films. French-born Kalki made her debut with an off beat flick called ‘Dev D’. And ever since, the girl seems more in sync with her roles such as in ‘Shaitan’ or ‘The Girl In Yellow Boots’. Her portrayal of the modern Chandramukhi in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Dev D’ which goes from an innocent schoolgirl to a vivacious prostitute was critically acclaimed.

Giselle Monteiro

Giselle managed to pull a pretty convincing Punjabi kudi act in Imtiaz Ali’s super hit ‘Love Aaj Kal’. Though a Brazil national, Giselle has been blessed with the looks of a classic Indian beauty. Impressed by her role in ‘Love Aaj Kal’, Bollywood megastar SRK decided to cast her in his next production ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’.

Barbara Mori

A beauty of Uruguayan-Japanese and Mexican origin, Barbara Mori was Bollywood director Rakesh Roshan’s discovery to play Hrithik Roshan’s love interest in the over ambitious ‘Kites’. Though the film, a one of a kind crossover bombed at the Box Office, Barbara Mori went on to become hugely popular amongst lot of filmmakers, with many even lining up at her door with offers!

Bruno Abdullah

First noticed in Channel V’s ‘India’s Hottest’, Bruno Abdullah, an Indian model of Brazilian and Arabian origin is known for her role as Giselle in Punit Malhotra`s ‘I Hate Luv Storys’, alongside Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor. Apart from performing an item song (Rehem Kare) for Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Cash’, Bruno appeared in reality TV Show ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’ Level 2 by Akshay Kumar.

Candice Boucher

The South African bombshell who is famous for doing photo shoots for big international magazines makes her debut with critically acclaimed ‘Azaan’. Featured in magazine like Playboy and FHM, her fans are looking forward to her innings in Bollywood and hopes she sizzles on screen the same way she sizzles in her photos!

Catrina Lopez

Here’s another firangi femme fatale newbie in B-town, apparently who claims to be the cousin of Latino sensation Jennifer Lopez! Catrina Lopez made her debut with an item number in Bollywood film ‘Bhindi Bazaar Inc.’. The girl had an instant connect with the masses but lacked the appeal of her famous cousin – Jennifer.
